This safari video was taken in Amboseli National Park in mid January, in between the short and long rains.

Unfortunately, most of Kenya was experiencing a severe and prolonged drought at the time. Three rainy seasons had failed due to a triple dip 'la Nina' weather pattern, which causes low rainfall in east Africa. Consequently much of the park was down to bare earth with only a few patches of short grass mostly nearer to the swamps. Grazing animals such as zebra and wildebeeste had suffered badly and there were a lot of corpses being picked over by scavengers. Many of the elephants had moved into the dispersal areas outside the park where there was still foliage on the trees and bushes.

There was plenty of water in the lakes and swamps, as they are spring fed from the Kilimanjaro catchment, and a plethora of wading birds were to be seen.

Normally Amboseli is much greener at this time of year.
